Stepping out of your comfort zone

Your Comfort Zone: yes it’s a warm and safe space but getting stuck in your comfort zone stunts your growth.

So how do you step out of your comfort zone and into the world of utterly amazing, life-changing opportunities?

Here are some things you can do right now to take a step closer to the exciting possibilities that lay just around the corner…

Recognise that your inner critic sits like a gatekeeper at the edge of your comfort zone. She’s there to warn about dangers; she’ll try and talk you out of it, tell you it’s a mistake, tell you that you can’t do it. But listen to your gut feeling, if there is an inkling of excitement there about what might be, then your inner critic needs to be gone. Learn to recognise this feeling of caution, then put it to one side knowing that you’re just trying to stand in your own way.

Get comfortable feeling uncomfortable. If these past 12 months have taught us anything it’s that we can exist – thrive even, at times, when we’re feeling uncomfortable, nervy, and anxious. This is an important life lesson. Feeling uncomfortable can force us to be creative and think outside the box, to change our state of mind. We become skilled at taking risks and trying new ideas. Growth feels like breaking sometimes – and that’s ok.

Find safety in your previous experiences. You can move beyond your comfort zone by finding parallels in what you’ve achieved before. Want to make a change? Draw strength from a similar shift you’ve made in the past. Explore what happened: How did it feel? What did you learn? How did you cope? Life experiences don’t need to be exactly the same to inform our future moves. Overcoming difficulties increases our resilience and confidence in our abilities. We have a better understanding of ourselves and empathy for others.
